My response to a question.
Q: What is the purpose of life, to you guys?
Why are we here? Well, consider the earth as a whole: what do we add to the picture? The colors of sunset are just as vivid without us, kittens as warm, the waves pounding the shore as timeless, the stars as far away. But the breathtaking beauty of the moment, more poignant because it is fleeting, the cuteness of little mammals, the immensity and majesty of the sea, the wonder of the stars, the knowledge that their very light is already millions of years old, that those tiny points are immense and impossibly far away... these are all in the eye and mind of the beholder. The universe is the sum of all things, and our perceptions and reactions, our thoughts and emotions, these are what we uniquely bring to the table. This is what we add. And for all our folly, it is justification enough. Would you add value to the human proposition? Perceive more. Feel more. Love more. Think more. Understand more. Wonder more. No one else can add your viewpoint to the shared perspective. Your consciousness exists. It is a rare treasure. Spend it lavishly.
If you ask me, and for some reason you did, that’s why we’re here. And it’s reason enough.
